SAINT JOSEPH HAUNTINGS
June 12, 2011BENTON HIGH SCHOOL
It is said if you go to the third floor at night and try to walk down the 200 foot hallway you will have books thrown at you. Also said that if you walk down the hall and yell, lockers will start opening and you will hear people on the intercom talking from the main office of the building. The school is built on top of an old indian burial, when you walk into the main entrance of the school building, and as soon as you enter the door, you are stepping on the leader of the tribe. About 10-15 years ago, a secretary died and today when you walk into the office you can smell the perfume that she wore. In a classroom on the third floor, you can look through the door and see people sitting and doing their homework. People claim these are students who died in a car crash. People also claim to see a red glowing light floating down the halls.
CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL
A ghost couple dwells here in the auditorium. Another spirit plays pranks and resides mostly in the bathrooms. A group of girls, along with other students and faculty members, have reported that it floods the bathrooms.
SARA LEE FOODS
At night, some of the guards have said to have seen the door of the guard shack open and then sounds of footsteps as if someone was coming in the guard shack. One guard said he was doing rounds and saw someone walking out back by the fence and there has been sounds coming from the basement when no one was in the building.
CITY CEMETERY
The cemetery on Amazonia Road in north St. Joseph is nearly abandoned and hasn't seen a burial for many years, but the memory of the past burials still haunts it. The cemetery was started in 1857 as burying ground for the poor of the city and the surrounding area. Over the years not only have the poor been buried there but also unidentified bodies killed on the railroads or found in the Missouri River. Records of who is buried there have long disappeared and there are very few grave markers of any sort. The poor marked loved one's graves with bricks, wooden boards, and even chunks of concrete from
buildings. The city discontinued use of the land in 1993 and tore down the caretaker's house and shed. If any place would be haunted it would be this place that has been forgotten. According to an article in the St. Joseph News-Press, farmers driving into town early in the mornings would see a ghostly figure of a woman walking from grave to grave. Legend says she is the ghost of a woman who murdered her lover and then died herself. Because she never had the opportunity to repent her sins, she now walks searching for the grave of the man she murdered to ask for his forgiveness.
KING HILL CEMETERY
According to the legend, in the 1840's, the pillars of the communtiy found a witch. After being tried, convicted, and killed, the witch was buried in The King Hill Cemetery. Years later, the Witch's Grave has become a place for local youths to prove their bravery in midnight visits. The grave site had become so popular that the tombstone was removed to keep it from being vandalized. There are many powers supposedly connected to the grave, but none have been proven. Many who have visited the cemetery have captured orbs and a floating mist. A voice recording has been captured also. A legend that has been proven to hold some truth is that of an indian warrior. Archeological evidence has been found indicating it was an indian burial ground. A story reported the tale of a pioneer girl who's family had been captured by an indian tribe. She fell in love with a warrior from that tribe and they ran away together. Somewhere in the course of their relationship something went wrong. Their bodies were found at the King Hill Lookout. He had scalped her and taken his own life. If they could not live together they, would not live at all. There have been claims that you can hear her moaning from the top of King Hill, mourning her death and that of her lover.
